Inertia:
Star power for life.
Scaling science into power.
Fusion is the process that has powered the sun for billions of years. Now, Inertia is working to recreate that process on Earth, firing some of the world’s most powerful lasers at fuel targets to unlock a new source of clean, commercial power.
Building on the laser-driven approach proven at the National Ignition Facility (NIF), Inertia is developing the technology needed to make inertial fusion energy work at scale; from powerful, modular lasers to precision-engineered fuel targets.
It’s an extraordinary story of science and engineering. The fusion process happens in fractions of a second, inside targets measured in millimetres, while the systems required to make it commercially viable span an enormous industrial scale.

Turning science into story.
OurFriends created a series of cinematic films that bring Inertia’s story to life: exploring the history and science of inertial fusion, the precision-engineered fuel targets at its heart, and the world’s most powerful laser.
The challenge was to communicate a highly complex technology without losing its scientific integrity. Balancing accuracy with drama, spectacle, and clarity, the films come together as a system that makes fusion feel both credible and within reach, while revealing the extraordinary potential of a new generation of clean energy.
We continue to work with Inertia’s founders as they chart a clear path from fusion science to commercial power.
Understanding the unseen.
Before we could visualise the technology, we had to understand it.
We worked closely with Inertia’s founders and nuclear physicists, immersing ourselves in the science behind inertial fusion. We studied everything from existing fusion facilities and scientific diagrams to engineering models and early concepts for future power plants. The aim was not simply to make the technology look convincing, but to understand how it actually works.
References, sketches, storyboards and early 3D studies became a shared language between our designers and Inertia’s team. They allowed us to test ideas, ask better questions and gradually translate complex systems into clear visual narratives.
At each stage, our CGI artists, editors and designers looked for the clearest and most compelling way to explain what was happening without compromising the science. The result is a visual language grounded in scientific accuracy, but designed for a much wider audience.

Giving form to the future.
The final films are built as three modular sequences, each exploring a different part of Inertia’s fusion technology. Designed to work independently or as part of a larger story, together they reveal how the system works across radically different scales.
By making the invisible visible, we transformed an extraordinarily complex system into something people can follow, understand and imagine. The result is a flexible visual language that gives shape to Inertia’s technology. Bringing the journey from fusion science to commercial power into focus, and making the promise of clean, limitless energy feel closer to reality.
